About chiropractic

Chiropractors are musculoskeletal system specialists. The musculoskeletal system consists of all the components of the muscular and skeletal systems, including bones, muscles, cartilage, tendons, joints, connective tissues, and the nervous system.

To practice in Canada, chiropractors must complete at least 7 years of post-secondary schooling, including a 4-year program at an accredited chiropractic college. As well, their final two years of education must include treating patients in a supervised clinic. To practice in Alberta, chiropractors must also pass the national clinical competency examination and maintain professional competency through ongoing, approved seminars and courses.

Through their education, doctors of chiropractic can diagnose the underlying cause of conditions their patients experience, then treat and recommend options to relieve pain, restore mobility, and prevent reoccurrence so their patients can lead healthy, active lives.

Because they are trained in the health of your musculoskeletal system, chiropractors can also recommend exercises, offer nutritional advice, and provide information on staying healthy generally.

All about chiropractors

What treatments do chiropractors use?

The main form of treatment chiropractors deliver is called an adjustment, a non-invasive, precise, directed movement to help relieve pain and discomfort and restore range of motion.

A chiropractor is authorized to refer patients directly to any medical specialist for  consultation or treatment as needed.

When should I see a chiropractor?

Patients see chiropractors for various reasons, but here are the most common:

  • Conditions of the spine and extremities
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Chronic and acute pain syndromes
  • Whiplash and auto accident injuries
  • Strains and sprains
  • Repetitive strain injuries/joint conditions
  • Arthritis
  • Work or sports injuries
  • Gait assessment and analysis
  • General health and well being
  • Nutritional, therapeutic exercise, lifestyle, and ergonomic counselling
How will chiropractic treatment help me?

When chiropractors treat acute and chronic pain, they have 6 goals in mind:

  1. Relieve pain
  2. Reduce muscle spasm and inflammation
  3. Increase flexibility
  4. Restore function and range of motion
  5. Customized treatment plan
  6. Return to normal activities of daily living as quickly as possible

For rehabilitative treatment, chiropractors focus on increasing strength and flexibility and providing stability.
